Metronidazole works by destroying and preventing the creation of DNA in the infecting organisms.

Unlike most other drugs, metronidazole is able to treat central nervous system infections by penetrating the blood- brain barrier.  In order to thrive, your dog’s body parts need good circulation and oxygen. Tissue that is damaged usually has poor oxygen circulation. In these areas, only certain pathogens that do not require oxygen can thrive. Metronidazole inhibits repair enzymes in the cells that exist in these unoxygenated (anaerobic) environments.

Like most antibiotics, metronidazole is prescribed to treat a variety of conditions, and to relieve their symptoms, such as:

  •  Gardia(and other parasites)
  • Inflammatory Bowel Diseas IBD
  • Oral and Dental infections
  • Other bacterial infections that cause  diarrhea or sepsi

NOTE: Metronidazole should not be given with food as food can reduce the bioavailability of the medication. The absorption of metronidazole can be decreased when given with food, which can decrease the effectiveness of the medication.

Metronidazole, commonly known by the brand name Flagyl,  is a strong antibiotic primarily used as an anti-diarrheal to treat inflammation of the large intestine. It is also used for other illnesses and conditions in dogs, cats, and horses, as well as to treat bacterial infections in humans. It is often used in combination with other antibiotics.

Metronidazole is a prescription-only medication that can be taken orally or externally, depending on the illness being treated. It is not yet approved by the FDA for veterinary use (it is approved for human use), but metronidazole is commonly prescribed by veterinarians for their canine patients.

Flagyl / Metronidazole is a commonly prescribed medication for dogs, but like any drug, it can have side effects. Below is a list of potential side effects, ranging from common to rare:

  • Nausea and Vomiting: These are the most frequently reported side effects.
  • Glossitis: Inflammation of the tongue.
  • Stomatitis: Inflammation of the mouth.
  • Neurotoxicity Symptoms: These can include seizures, loss of coordination (ataxia), tremors, blindness, and disorientation. After discontinuing metronidazole, clinical signs of neurotoxicity in dogs usually start to improve. However, it may take a few weeks or even months for them to fully recover.
  • Temporary Loss of Smell: This is a rare side effect that usually resolves within 10 days after discontinuing the medication.

Metronidazole should not be used in dogs with a known allergy or sensitivity. Additionally, metronidazole should not be used in pregnant or lactating female dogs as its safety is uncertain at this time.

If your dog has liver disease, your veterinarian should reduce the dose significantly as metronidazole is excreted via the liver, therefore, any liver damage may affect the elimination of metronidazole from the body and increase the chances of liver toxicity.
